Patient Information

Children’s mouths, including their teeth and gums, are essential in the growth of their bodies. Their teeth not only allow them to chew their nutritious food properly and form sounds correctly; they will also contribute to their self-confidence and self-esteem. Creating a consistent, regular routine at home and then visiting us at West Mobile Children’s Dentistry twice a year can build good preventative habits and keep their cute little smiles healthy.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Visit (Ages 0 to 3 years)

We strongly encourage that your child be seen by a dentist at the age of 1 year, or within 6 months of the eruption of his or her first tooth. At this visit, the baby or young child will sit in the parent’s lap and lean back into the lap of the pediatric dentist.  In this position, the dentist will be able to quickly and easily brush, check, and apply fluoride the child’s teeth.  This is called a knee to knee exam and helps the child feel secure in the lap of his/her parent.

Our hope is that as the child gets older, he/she feels comfortable sitting in the dental chair for a routine check up.

Prepare and Work with Your Child

To prevent dental anxiety, we do our best to make the visits relaxing and fun. Preparing your child is extremely helpful, so read a few books about going to the dentist, or take them along to one of your appointments. Our first visit will be about building trust and a bond with your child.

Parents are always welcome and encouraged to be with their child during cleaning and treatment appointments, when IV sedation is not being administered.
