Dental Sealants for Children
Dental Sealants
Though consistent and regular brushing is the foundation of a healthy smile, some teeth are simply harder to keep cleaner than others. The molars have a surface covered with natural pits and tiny crevices which can easily trap food particles making them far more difficult to clean completely. While the mouth does have its own defenses against bacteria and decay, these are much more effective on the smoother surfaces of some teeth and cannot adequately protect the deeper fissures of the molars. Young children who are still learning to practice proper dental hygiene will have a far more difficult time keeping their molars clean, resulting in a perfect environment for the harboring of bacteria and the beginning of tooth decay. Roughly 80% of cavities found in children under the age of 15 develop on the biting surfaces of these back molars. To help protect these problem areas and keep them safe, we recommend dental sealants.
How do the Dental Sealants Work?
Dental sealants provide protection for your child's adult or baby molars. The sealant is painted in a thin layer onto your child's tooth, where it fills in the crevices and creates a shallower, smoother surface that is then easier to clean. Since sealant is bonded to the tooth surface, it seals out any food that could otherwise have become trapped, and therefore prevents bacteria from reaching and damaging the enamel.
Dental sealants cannot prevent all cavities. While they do offer a remarkably effective defense for the chewing surfaces, they cannot be applied in between the teeth or on other tooth surfaces. Your child's teeth will still need regular brushing and care. A sealant must be cared for properly. It can be cracked by chewing hard substances like ice or become loosened with sticky foods. The condition of the sealants should be checked at every regular dental checkup to ensure that they are still intact and undamaged. As long as the sealants remain attached, and teeth are properly cared for, dental sealants do provide great added protection to your child's molars.
When is the Best Time to get Sealants?
Dental sealants are usually used in situations when the molars are in danger of decay, or when we detect early signs of decay. We suggest that most children should receive dental sealants as soon as their adult molars have fully erupted; some could even benefit from having them on baby teeth. The shape of each tooth surface, your child’s diet, and their normal dental habits are all factors as well. West Mobile Children’s Dentistry can determine what will be best for your child's needs and ensure their smile stays healthy and bright.
